On the 8th of June 2014, I was involved in a homophobic hate crime whilst on a night out in Vauxhall in which a man threw concentrated ammonia in my face, subsequently blinding me for months. I wasn’t out as gay at the time and whilst the attack was thankfully widely reported across the media, it meant that I was forced to come out in a really public and sudden way. A year later however, once my sight had returned, I found myself appreciating the attack and all of the great things that have come of it since and can happily say it ended up being a blessing in bleachy disguise.
